People’s Indian classical dance theatre “Nakshatra” was founded in 2004 by Anna Smirnova, a professional Indian dance performer who graduated from the diploma thesis and after her graduation course in Bharatanatiyam in Delhi under the guidance of the guru Jayalakshmi Ishwar, a famous Indian dancer and choreographer. Nakshatra is one of the first schools in Ukraine to study style Bharatanatyam. In 2009, the dance theater received the title of Ukrainian people’s ensemble. In addition to learning the art of Indian classical dance, the theater actively cooperates with the Embassy of India in Ukraine in due to more wide spreading Indian culture. Regular classes in Indian dances are held at the Red Building of the National University named after T. Shevchenko at the Youth Center of the University.
